Please enjoy these notes from our Summer Newsletter for 2010:
The Spring of 2010 will go into the record books as one of the wettest and coolest. In late May and we were still wearing our sweatshirts and jackets until noon every day. With our weekly rain showers, usually on Tuesday, growing conditions for some crops were not too good, especially the melons and watermelons. Tomatoes seem to be doing quite well but we anticipate a harvest season one to two weeks later. I also foresee harvest schedules to run together. This makes sales challenging when a lot of product matures at the same time and there is a rush to get it harvested and to market.
The Asparagus harvest was up and down with outside temperatures affecting harvest amounts. We may have had 1000 cases on Monday and 400 on Wednesday. But it was what it was and we were thankful for the bounty and diversity that each day brought.
We finally have harvested our first cutting of hay and the fields are fields are filling in nicely. Barley harvest is near and we anticipate excellent yields and quality.
